What No One Tells You About Creating Content Every Day

I am a content creator. As soon as we launched our photography business and as soon as blogging was a thing- I've created content.

Which means I have created content almost daily since 2009.

When you start your business content creation seems fun. You're inspired to do it and you are jazzed up to get the word out about your buisness. But, sooner than later (sooner than most people tell you), the content creation side of your business can become insanely hard and draining. You find yourself creating content MORE than you are actually running your business!

And here's the thing: You didn't sign up to be a full time content creator. (or did you??)

Creating the right content that truly resonates with your audience is harder than you'd think. People today are finiky and our attention spans are short. Creating the right information that will not only get your audience to see you but to stick around AND become a customer can be tough.

It is important to know what you're getting into before you start. I've talked to so many business owners who were surprised at how challenging it is to constantly create engaging content and to actually run your business at the same time.

Here are 9 things that no one tells you when it comes to content creation for your business online:

  1. Creating good content will take longer than you anticipate.

Everywhere you look on social media, is someone advertising that you can make 100 pieces of content in under 30 minutes. And let me tell you this- you CAN do that, yes. It is absolutely possible. But, unless you have the right systems, softwares, and some experience, it is going to take longer than you think. It's completely acceptable for one piece of content to take over an hour to create. Spending the right amount of time on creating quality content over the quantity of content is key here.

Soon enough, you'll get the hang of it and can speed up the process. But, just realize that it might take longer than you'd think, and that is perfectly ok. Just be ready for it.

  2. You will think one piece of content will translate well and it will get zero traction.

So, you'll spend all this time creating what you think is actual GOLD and as soon as you post it, it flops. This is normal. It doesn't necessarily mean that you were wrong about posting it, there just might be a few things that you need to tweak. Also maybe not though. The algorithm is like that, and so are human beings. Don't dwell on it too long and just keep moving forward.

  3. Building a brand with your content takes longer than you think. Overnight sensations are only a thing to the audience. What we don't see, is the content creator busting their butt and staying consistent for 10+ years in some cases. Failure after failure, disappointment after frustration. High highs, and low lows. We just see them explode and wonder why our content hasn't taken off yet. Well, you just haven't been doing it long enough. And, you might not know you audience well enough. So keep going and don't quit! Just keep tweaking until you get it right.

  4. It takes a wild amount of consistency. You can't post three times a week and then ghost your accounts for the next 4 weeks. That doesn't work. Consistency happens in the little steps you take every day. It's monotonous. It can be boring. You will feel like you're saying the same things over and over and over again. But, your consistency will pay off. But you gotta stay consistent to see the results you're wanting and even needing!

  5. If you aren't a graphic designer (most of us aren't), Canva will be your best friend. I started using Canva in 2015 when a blog I used to run turned into an online magazine. That magazine is no longer in production, but my love for Canva hasn't quit! I loved that Canva has a free option. I now use the Canva Pro option and can't imagine my life without it. I'm not a graphic designer, but I do have an eye for design and it's helped me create content for so many different brands DAILY. There isn't a day where I don't open Canva. I'm literally not kidding. I read my Bible in the morning and after that, I get to work in Canva every day. It's the best and I'm so thankful for it!

  6. Comparison will kill your vibe. In any industry, comparing yourself to others is going to make it rough for you. As a content creator? It will completely kill your vibe, your creativity, and your will to keep creating. So, stay focused on yourself and as hard as it is, try not to compare yourself to others online. It's hard, I know but don't get caught in that trap.

  7. Using programs like Leadpages or Stan Store will save you when it comes to landing pages. Creating a landing page where you can house all of your offers and point all the traffic to will be hugely helpful. Using programs like Leadpages and Stan Store have been a gamechanger for my business and for my sanity. Both of those companies are great and this will help you to streamline your offers. With Stan Store, my customers can even purchase my offers right there which saves me a lot of time and effort because I don't need crazy fancy softwares. I need simple programs that do the job affordably, and Stan Store definitely does that. Get 14 days for free right HERE if you want to give it a try!

  8. Content creation is a constant part of building a business online. What a lot of business owners don't realize is that creating content truly is an essential part of building a business online. But, when you launch your business, social media and content creation is the fun and exciting part! Then, the daily grind sets in and you will find that creating content is challenging. So, if you have the expecation set upfront, come up with a calendar and a schedule that's doable for you, creating content can be manageable and joyful. Most of the time. ;)

  9. You'll want to quit on many days. I've been a business owner since 2009 and there have been SO many days where I've wanted to quit. That's truly when you have to remind yourself of your why, and really dig in deep to keep going. On days like that, I do something that allows me to take a break. Take a walk, a bubble bath, go get coffee with a friend, watch a show before bed and just let yourself not think about your business for a few hours. Things always look brighter the next day. Quitting won't get you closer to your goals, so learn how to take breaks instead. It will save your sanity!

Being a small business owner really does mean that you are a content creator in some way. OR you've hired one. It's an essential part of the business that most people don't realize is essential until they are up to their ears with Reels that need to get posted to get the word out about their business.

But the truth? It doesn't have to be a total drag. Set yourself up for success starting with realizing that creating content for your business is just a part of running a business in this day and age, MOST of the time. Invest in the programs and support that you need, hire people who are strong in the areas that you're weak. Set out to create content that resonates with your audience and that yields you RESULTS and it won't feel like sucha burden, it will be fun!
