You Don’t Need to Post Christmas Content Yet. But You Should Start Planning It.

I know what you’re thinking.

“It’s August. I’m still trying to enjoy summer. Why are we talking about Christmas?”

Trust me, I’m not suggesting you start decorating your Instagram feed with candy canes or posting gift guides before Labor Day. But I do think this is one of the most important times of year to start planning your holiday marketing AND Meta agrees.

Meta recently released its 2026 Holiday Insights Center along with a holiday playbook for small businesses. The company’s message is simple: successful holiday campaigns don’t begin in November. They begin months earlier, while businesses still have time to think strategically instead of reacting at the last minute. I think that’s advice worth paying attention to, especially if your business relies on search, content, or seasonal traffic.

The Holidays Start Earlier Than We Think

One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make is waiting until November to ask, “What should I post for the holidays?”

By then, you’re already behind.

Not because you can’t create content quickly, but because great marketing often needs time to work. Blog posts need time to be indexed by search engines. Pinterest pins need time to circulate. Email campaigns need to be written. Product photography has to be edited. Promotions have to be planned. The earlier you prepare, the calmer the holiday season feels.

Planning Is Different Than Posting

This is the distinction I hope every business owner hears. Planning your holiday content doesn’t mean publishing it tomorrow.

It means giving your future self a gift.

Right now is the perfect time to think through the products or services you’ll highlight, the questions customers ask every holiday season, the promotions you might offer, and the stories you want to tell. None of that has to appear online today. You’re simply creating a roadmap so you’re not scrambling later.

Start With a Holiday Content Map

Whenever people ask me how to prepare for the holidays, I encourage them to keep it simple.

Instead of opening Canva first, grab a notebook.

Write down the products or services you want to feature this holiday season. Think about the questions your customers ask every year. Consider the gifts people might search for, the blog posts that would answer those questions, the Pinterest pins that could drive traffic, and the emails you’d like to send. If you need new photos or videos, make a note of those now, too.

You don’t have to create everything today. You just need a plan.

Search Rewards Businesses That Prepare Early

One of the reasons I care so much about planning ahead is because so much of the content I teach is built around search.

Unlike a social media post that appears almost instantly, searchable content often needs time to gain traction. Search engines need to crawl and understand your blog posts. Pinterest needs time to distribute your pins. Helpful holiday resources have a much better chance of being discovered if they’re published before people begin searching in large numbers.

That’s why I encourage business owners to think beyond the next week. When you give your content time to work, you’re giving your business more opportunities to be found.

Your Future Self Will Thank You

I don’t think holiday marketing has to feel stressful.

In fact, I think one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself is walking into November knowing your plan is already in place. Instead of reacting to every deadline, you’ll spend your time refining content you’ve already prepared and serving customers with confidence.

You don’t need to post Christmas content in August. But I do think you’ll be glad you started planning it.

Make Holiday Planning Easier

If the thought of mapping out months of content feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. That’s exactly why I created the Content Clarity Workbook. It will help you organize your ideas, identify the topics your audience is searching for, and create a simple content plan you can actually follow. Instead of wondering what to post when the holidays arrive, you’ll already have a clear direction, AND a lot less stress.

FAQ Section

When should I start planning holiday marketing?

For many small businesses, August or early fall is an ideal time to begin planning. Starting early gives you time to create blog posts, photography, email campaigns, and seasonal content before customers begin searching in large numbers.

Do I need to post Christmas content in August?

No. Planning and publishing are two different things. August is a great time to organize your ideas and create a content calendar, but most holiday content can be published later based on your audience and platform.

Why does search-driven content need more time?

Search engines and Pinterest often need time to discover, index, and distribute content. Publishing helpful holiday resources before seasonal search activity peaks can increase the chances of your content being found.

What should be included in a holiday content plan?

A simple holiday content plan might include your featured products or services, common customer questions, gift ideas, blog posts, pins, email campaigns, promotional dates, and any photography or video you’ll need to create ahead of time.
